Dr. Zuansi Cai is a Professor of Energy and Environmental Engineering at Edinburgh Napier University. He was awarded the Royal Academy of Engineering Industrial Fellowship 2021/22 in energy storage and is currently a member of the EPSRC Peer Review College. Prior to joining Edinburgh Napier University, he conducted research on three multi-million-pound UK- and EU-funded projects at the University of Sheffield and Queen’s University Belfast. His research interests include energy storage, renewable energy, and intelligent energy systems. His earlier research experience includes soil and groundwater remediation, flow and transport modelling, uncertainty quantification, and groundwater risk assessment associated with hydraulic fracturing for shale gas.
报告摘要：
Underground hydrogen storage can store grid-scale energy for balancing both short-term and long-term inter-seasonal supply and demand. The Rough reservoir beneath the Southern North Sea off the east coast of England has been identified as a potential TWh-scale hydrogen storage facility, which could play a key role in the UK’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
In this study, we use our in-house model (GPSFLOW) to conduct a hydrogen storage scenario analysis in the Rough reservoir. The storage scenarios include the use of CO₂ as cushion gas for seasonal hydrogen storage, taking into account the regional CO₂ supply chain, existing wells, and historical natural gas storage data. The analysis not only investigates the hydrogen and CO₂ storage capacities of the Rough reservoir but also examines the impacts of hydrogen injection/withdrawal cycles and storage location on the quality of the extracted hydrogen gas.
